Switchgrass is shown ready for harvest. Biomass logistics couples agricultural production with industrial conversion of biomass into fuel and products.

Biomass logistics involves harvest, transport, storage, and processing of agricultural-produced plant materials. The goal is to supply abundant quantities of biomass with predictable properties under various conditions to allow the conversion of feedstock into economic fuels and products. This supply chain depends to a high degree on the selected format chosen for the biomass. Hay bales are one format, but that system has perceived limitations from the biorefinery's point of view, including transporting, de-stringing, de-baling, and overall economics. We focus on a low-moisture, bulk-format approach created during harvesting with a forage harvester. A bulk format system has potential to streamline handling at increased scale and reduced costs.
